Devin & Taylor: The Surprise...

It wasn't a matter of "if" Devin and Taylor were going to get married, but a matter of "when". Devin has been planning her future wedding from dates to venue selections, but there was no ring yet.  Just when she thought the moment was going to happen, Taylor threw a curve and kept her on the edge of her seat.  I'll give it to her, she was a very determined bride to be. So lets discuss the plan...

THE PLAN:  Taylor reached out to me a little over a month ago.  The secret FB messages and texts worked well.  We discussed ideas, locations and logistics etc.  I traveled unbeknownst to Devin to the location a week prior, scouted it and went over a strategy with Taylor.  He had showed me the gigantic letters, I explained what kind of light setup would work well.  Found my tree hiding spot a distance from the spot and hoped for good weather on Sunday. All the while, Devin is texting me what available wedding dates I have for 2017.  In my mind, I'm thinking she knows...she didn't. Taylor bought the lights and rigged the whole area days prior all without her knowing.  Amazing.

THE PROPOSAL:  I reached the location at 6pm tonight.  Met up with Andrew and Ally, Taylor's friends, to walk down to the spot, help with the lights getting turned on and were my shooting dummies to test the lighting.  Tea lights were placed through the walkway prior, along with pictures of the couple over their dating history.  The sign was huge and lit to perfection.  The effort he put into this was simply inspiring.  Honestly, he basically gets boyfriend gold stars for life for this. Taylor texted Andrew giving us a heads up of the walk down.  Apparently when your hiding behind a tree, 5-10 min feels really long for the flashlight indicator.  I suddenly heard giggles (Devin) basically the whole walk down.  I think she knew what was going on...or did she?  I stayed put so the flashlight didn't graze me and give me away.  Devin had her eyes closed per instructions once they got to the flat surface.  He gave the signal, Andrew hit the lights, I turned on my equipment and got ready. Taylor positioned Devin for the moment...

Obviously I have no idea what he said, I kept seeing Devin dance around, giggle and smile.  I am shooting away knowing the waterfall behind them was blocking my noise perfectly. He got down on one knee and...well...you can fill in the rest.  He eventually turned her to my direction and pointed, I came out of hiding and she ran over and gave me a hug and was like "what are doing here?".  Andrew and Ally popped out next.  Needless to say, she had many questions of how, when, what, who?  All questions were answered with laughs, smiles and nods.   It was something special and I was thrilled to be there.

CLOSING: Shooting in darkness is no easy task, so I apologize if the level of detail is not exactly there, but you will get the gist of what what the plan was with the photos.  We hung out and took a couple more planned photos and then made our way back to Taylor's mom for a little surprise for Devin.  He arranged to have her family be there, to be the first ones to get a glimpse of the ring.  Again, very cool moment.  I am so happy for Devin!  She has become a great friend and collaborator for me.  To see her so happy and in love makes me happy.  They deserve each other and I am so excited for their future.  Taylor is a great guy and it has been wonderful getting to know him through this adventure.  So I hope this little tale paints a good picture of what is below.  If not, don't worry. Devin and Taylor will have no problem telling this story again and again. Enjoy the secret proposal.
