Day in The Life: Dawn, Matt, Arya & Brynn

These sessions are ambitious, real, exhausting and some of the most fulfilling of any sessions I take part in.  I get asked all the time, will you just follow me around for the day?  I laugh it off and then the issue is mute. Not this time. Nope.

What started as an idea to add this as a business service, quickly became something bigger.  It turned into a personal project to show families as they truly are.  Regardless of race, financial status and age, my goal was to capture 1 day in the life of a few lucky families that wanted to partake and see a stripped down and raw version of themselves. What came out of this fourth attempt is still something l can't really put into words. I don't know if I ever will.

There is joy, laughter, bolt, beer, sprinklers, fruit pops, animal loyalty, imagination, youth and most importantly, family connection.  I am showing you the whole collection in one shot again.  No teaser, no come back later to see the rest.  This is the finished product.  It was shot and edited completely in B&W.  No color, no Photoshop retouches. Nothing. I couldn't think of a better way to get the right impact out of these moments below than in glorious B&W, my favorite medium. I shot what I saw, there was no direction. Not once did a "cheese" come out of anyone's mouths.  The restraint and having to hold back from the typical engagement with the family is still so so so hard, but the result is something truly special. Getting to know these 4 even further and vice versa was a fantastic take away.  I got those sad hugs goodbye from the girls.  My heart melted.  Loved that moment.

I was asked years ago, "Do you like taking pictures"?  I replied with, "I love telling stories with my pictures".  I hope that this resonates with you.  In fact I hope it does with a lot of you. Whether it triggers a memory, makes you laugh or even makes you cry of moments of yesterday.  Life is fleeting.  It goes so fast.  It is crazy to think this was a single day and that 364 follow this to make up their year.

As I drove home, I left with a better appreciation of what parents go through on a minute to minute, hour by hour basis with their kids. It is really damn hard. Multiple kids is no picnic and I will never know what my Mother (there were 3 of us) went though.  Maybe I should ask.

Dawn & Matt, we have known each other for nearly 5 years.  How did that happen?  I can't think of a time that we weren't talking beer and food.  It truly wouldn't have been right without you guys doing this project with me.  You are always commenting,  referring and letting me try new ideas with your crew.  You let me into your world for a single day and that is not something I take lightly at all.  We talked, we laughed (as always) and below is your family from an outside perspective.  If anything, this collection proves that you guys hustle hard, communicate (even over the who exercises first) and you work so hard to keep those kiddos moving until they collapse watching really off the wall Netflix cartoons.  Seriously, where were the Legos in that cartoon?.  You both were amazing to watch in action.  The tag teaming alone blew me away.  It was really inspiring and you do this every. single. day.  Kudos for making it look so damn easy. You knew what you signed up for and the kids will reap the rewards of what you've done for them, that is for certain. So...yeah.  No more mushy mush.  We had 27 hours together.  This is what it looked like. xoxo.
